The Hazards of Metal Fillings

Most of us have grown up never questioning the use of composite metal or amalgam fillings, not realizing the inherent dangers of having mercury-based fillings in our teeth.
Amalgam, the single most popular choice for filling cavities for the last hundred years, is a combination of about 50% liquid mercury and powdered metal alloys such as silver, tin, or copper. It has always been a popular choice because it’s fairly durable, relatively inexpensive, and easy to apply.

However, the silvery tooth fillings are not particularly attractive and are considerably less functional than today’s metal free options. A major flaw of amalgam tooth fillings that many of us have experienced is contraction or expansion when exposed to hot or cold temperatures. The shrinking or expansion weakens the structural integrity of the tooth, and the movement of the filling exposes the tooth to bacteria, which can lead to serious gum disease.

Long term mercury poisoning has been linked to depression, decreased fertility, neurological impairment, gastrointestinal issues, and memory loss among many other effects.

Metal Free Dentistry, a Safer Alternative

More significantly, we are aware from numerous studies that amalgam tooth fillings have been found to release a toxic mercury vapor into our mouths, which slowly leaches its way into our bodies and deposits trace mercury into our vital organs for as long as we have these fillings.
In 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a news release warning against the use of amalgam fillings in pregnant women and those with mercury sensitivity. It later followed this warning up by reclassifying amalgam fillings from a Class I medical device to a Class II (higher risk) device. Since then, consumer groups have been petitioning the agency to place a ban on amalgam fillings. Studies have shown that mercury poisoning is cumulative and can take as long as twenty or more years to manifest. Long term mercury poisoning has been linked to depression, decreased fertility, neurological impairment, gastrointestinal issues, and memory loss among many other effects.
