What is a CEREC machine?

CEREC stands for “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics.” Dental crowns can be made from metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, porcelain, or ceramic – which will dictate how long you wait, whether you will need a temporary fix, and the cost. CEREC crowns are made of a solid block or ceramic or resin that can be made right in our office without delay. It is made from a single block of material, so it is tougher than porcelain. Materials are metal-free, so they are ideal for people concerned with the health implications of metal or simply have allergies. Crowns closely match the natural tooth structure and feel, and they are sensitive to extreme temperatures. The CEREC machine is a hybrid of an imaging machine and 3D printer that makes personalized dental crowns in about 20 minutes.

Same Day Dental Crowns

Traditionally, patients had to make several appointments for the completion of their dental crowns. During the first visit, patients would have impressions made, then endure the initial procedure and receive a temporary restoration. Weeks later, you would receive another anesthetic injection so that the dentist could remove the temporary and install the permanent crown. By contrast, CEREC crowns are completed in just single visit to our Huntington and Rocky Point, NY offices in Suffolk County. The process is high-tech, but surprisingly simple. First, Dr. Augenbaum or Dr. Koschitzki examines and prepares the tooth to receive the crown. Then the dentists take an accurate optical impression using computer technology and design the restoration while you wait. Finally, a 3-D printer shapes a ceramic block into the exact mold we have created for you. This whole process takes about 20 minutes. We fit the restoration into your mouth, polish it up, and bond it to the tooth. And just like that! Done. No need to come back for a second visit.

The Advantages of CEREC crowns

Long lasting dental crowns

CEREC crowns look and feel like your real teeth, so many patients remark that the results exceed their expectations. In fact, the patient satisfaction rate of CEREC crowns is 98.8%, according to a study published in the International Journal of Computerized Dentistry in 2005. That same study also found that 98% of the 617 veneers studied were “clinically acceptable” after nine years. Two other studies conducted in 2002 and 2008 found that the success rate dipped slightly to 90.4% after 10 years and 88.7% after 17 years. Even though some fracturing did occur in the long run, researchers concluded that, compared to other products on the market, CEREC crowns had “a very respectable clinical outcome.”
